Lexco® Cable’s Internship Program Helps High School Students Build Skills and Gain Hands-on Experience
Two high school students from Ridgewood High School in Norridge, IL are getting hands-on experience and building skills in the machining industry through Lexco Cable’s Internship Program.
Donovan and Carolina, both upperclassmen at Ridgewood High School, enrolled in the school’s TMA program to gain work experience in the machining industry. The program follows the school’s semester schedule and involves attending the TMA center in Schaumburg every Monday and Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. -2:45 p.m.
In the TMA program, Donovan and Carolina learned how to use measuring tools, analyze blueprints, write machine-specific code, and operate the lathe, mill, and tap machines within the shop. In December, their class completed a test to gain the NIMS Machining Level 1 certification alongside the TMA Level 1 CNC certification, which served as a completion of the semester-long class.
After winter break, Donovan and Carolina worked with their internship coordinator, Ms. Wicklund, to create resumes for internships. Fortunately, both of their applications landed in the hands of Lexco, who offered them internship positions.
Through their internship at Lexco, Donovan and Carolina have had the opportunity to improve company safety protocols, aid in customer sales, manage work order entry data, organize the workplace, and maintain machine upkeep. They have enjoyed the friendly work environment created by the wonderful employees and their supervisor, David Karbin.
“We are very grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow at Lexco Cable,” said Donovan. “The internship has allowed us to put our skills into practice and gain valuable hands-on experience in the field.”
Carolina added, “We hope to use the skills we’ve acquired from the TMA program and our internship to give us a headstart in potential career positions.”
David Karbin, their supervisor, has been impressed with Donovan and Carolina’s work ethic and commitment to learning. “They are eager to learn and always willing to lend a helping hand,” he said. “I believe they will have bright futures in the machining industry.”
Lexco Cable’s Internship Program provides valuable opportunities for high school students to gain hands-on experience and build skills in the machining industry. The program serves as a stepping stone for students to pursue career opportunities in the field.
